Spring is one of my favourite times of year to go on a city break. It feels very Emily in Paris, if you know what I mean. It’s shoulder season in Europe, you’ve got a better chance of that perfect weather, you know the one…blue skies, sunshine, but you’re not sweating through your best holiday outfits and constantly searching for a shady spot to drink your cocktail in. So yes, the best city breaks, in my humble opinion, are to be had in Spring, and this guide has a city break for every type of holiday go-er.

So whether you’re an adventurer, a budget conscious queen, or all about the food, here are some of the best city breaks to go on in Spring.

Best City Breaks For the adventure seeker

Hands down, the best city break I’ve been on is to Funchal in Madeira. It has everything – incredible views, boujie hotels, delicious food and a whole lot of adventure. For me, it’s the incredible hikes that are on offer there with stunning views (I want to go back purely for a hiking holiday!!), but if you’re more adventurous than me, there’s activities like canyoning, caving and off roading.

And when you’re in need of some resting after an adventurous day out, Madeira is filled with boutique hotels and top rated restaurants so you can relax, recharge and refuel in style.

A weekend city break for the foodie

The thing that surprised me the most about my city break to Budapest was just how good the food was there. I naively thought that Hungarian food might not be for me, or be a little bland and boring, however that couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, there’s a gentleness to the flavours, but there is a real joy in the simplicity and the softness. My favourite meal I had there was at BIBO, a fusion of Spanish and Hungarian gastronomy and wow the flavours here blew me away.

From Michelin restaurants, to artisan coffee shops, to restaurants with real history behind them – I can guarantee that you will eat well when you visit Budapest.

a budget city break that will leave you feeling relaxed

If you’re looking for the best city breaks that won’t cost the earth, I really recommend a trip to Bucharest in Romania. I ended up visiting here on a real whim; a friend had found £20 flights for the following week and asked if I wanted to come, and how can you say no to that? 4 days in the city cost us £300 each – including accommodation, flights, food and activities.

You’ve probably seen Bucharest if you’ve ever looked for spa break ideas – right next to the airport is Therme Bucharest – a huge spa (and waterpark!) which is a really great place to relax and is a lot cheaper than a UK spa break.

Best city breaks to feel like a kid again

Okay, so Disneyland Paris might not technically be a city BUT if you’re planning a trip to Paris, you need to add at least a day trip to Disneyland in your itinerary.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, there is a true magic to Disneyland Paris. You leave your worries at the gate, and just be present, have fun, and really just be a big kid. Riding rollercoasters, waving at characters, and dancing down Main Street.

My favourite time of year to go to Disneyland Paris is in the springtime – longer (and hopefully sunnier) days but not too hot for queuing in the sun, usually slightly quieter, and the parks look so colourful and vibrant.

A theatre lovers city break

A weekend city break to London always feels special – especially when you know there’s a trip to London’s West End. London really is a theatre lovers dream – whether you’re wanting to see a big West End Show, your favourite telly star doing a play at the National Theatre, or seeing a play you know nothing about in one of the historic theatres.

London in Spring really does feel like you’re in Notting Hill. Cherry Blossoms are blooming, sitting outside and enjoying your coffee and the perfect temperature where it still feels tolerable on the tube!
