How to spend the perfect weekend on the Solway Coast, Cumbria

Cumbria is most well known for being home to The Lake District, but what people often forget, or don’t realise, is there’s a fantastic coastal area to Cumbria, which is the perfect place for a weekend away. After having many a day trip to the Solway Coast, and spending a few brilliant weekends staying here, here’s the ultimate Postcards From guide to a weekend away on the Solway Coast.

Where to stay

Colourful sign saying Solway with 4 Cove Characters stood on it at Solway Holiday Park

It’s the second time that I’ve stayed at Solway Holiday Park, and I absolutely love it here. It’s around a 5 minute walk to the sea, and a 10 minute walk into Silloth itself, and it’s the perfect location for exploring more (as well as chilling out by the sea!).

What’s brilliant about the Solway Holiday Park is that there’s something for all of the family here, and it really is friendly here. Whether it’s live music on a Saturday afternoon to enjoy with a drink and a freshly made woodfired pizza, trying archery, or taking a swim in the pool – there’s lots to do, and you won’t be bored! For the kids, there’s a kids club with loads of activities, as well as the activities and a new playarea which is opening in the next few weeks.

On-site facilities at Solway Holiday Park

It feels like Solway Holiday Park is forever growing and improving their facilities, and you can tell they really care about creating a great holiday for everyone.

So, here’s a quick run down on the on-site facilties at the Holiday Park;

Seasonal events at Solway Holiday Park

As well as the regular activities, there are also special events and seasonal activites to look forward to.

Currently, there is Ice Skating at Solway Holiday Park! This is on until 4th May 2025, and you don’t need to be staying to have a go – you can book online here. There are themed nights as well for you to enjoy, including 80’s, musicals and Disney!

Other events coming up include;

  • Cove Fest – 12th – 14th September 2025 : this is a brilliant free weekend of music, food and fun. The compear for the evening is Shane Nolan and there’s lots of fantastic live music to enjoy
  • Cove Fest-ive – 31st October – 2nd November : celebrate Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas in one weekend! You’ll be able to enjoy the funfair, fireworks, live music, Scarefest, Christmas shopping at our market, and festive food.

Eating at Solway Holiday Park

Let’s start with the main restaurant, Border’s Bar and Restuarant. It’s open from 9am, and last orders for food is at 9pm and you can get breakfast, lunch and tea here (and Sunday dinner on a sunday!). I’m always amazed at the range of food on the menu – it’s far more than just burger and chips. There’s classic meals like steak and ale pie (my dad had and loved it) and lasange (I had this last year and was a fan!). There’s burgers, there’s steaks and hot skillet plates (mum had the lamb kofta and was raving about it!). There’s salads, there’s really good veggie options, and there’s my personal fave, the katsu chicken curry.

The service is really friendly, and I love the menu options – there’s so much to choose from and it all feels freshly cooked. It’s not all fried, and there’s just a really good range of food.

As well as the restaurant, there’s also an outdoor pizza van, serving freshly made woodfired pizzas. These are delicious – if you’re a thin and crispy pizza fan like me, then you’re in heaven.

There’s also a noodle stall, and a fish and chip shop – I haven’t tried these two, but they seemed just as popular and smelt delicious!

Your weekend itinerary for exploring the Solway Coast

So this is going to be a pretty relaxed itinerary – mainly because sometimes you just need some down time, and there’s so much to do just on the holiday park. You really could base yourself here for a week, and explore more into the lakes, including some of the quieter lakes like Ennerdale!

Friday evening

You’ve got checked in to your caravan (or chalet), and the sun is shining (hopefully!). One thing you need to know about Silloth is that the sunsets here are out of this world.

Walk into Silloth, grab some fish and chips from Silloth Cafe Fish and Chip Shop (my fave!), and walk to the promanade and grab your spot to watch the sun set. I do this every time I stay in Silloth and I can’t recommend it enough.

When you head back to Solway Holiday Park you’ve got some options; head back to your cosy caravan to have a cuppa and settle in for the night, or head to the bar and entertainment area where there are shows, bingo and discos!

Saturday

You’ve got to kick off a Saturday with Parkrun, and Silloth has a brilliant Parkrun. It’s flat, it right by the sea and it’s super friendly!

Post parkrun breakfast has to be at the Fairydust Emporium (you get 10% off as a Parkrunner as well!). It’s a really good full english here, and if you’ve got a pooch, they get a free sausage or puppachino. It was Finn’s first ever trip here when we went, and he absolutely loved it.

We spent our Saturday afternoon back at Solway Holiday Park – ice skating, pottery painting and enjoying some of the live music that was on! Pottery painting here is great, there’s loads of different options, and then you can pick it up the next day!

For your evening meal, sit down in Boarders and enjoy a delicious meal. It’s a really lively atmosphere in here – afterwards why not head to the arcade before seeing the evening’s entertainment.

Sunday

Why not have a day of exploring on Sunday. Whether you head to Ennerdale, or to the nearby town of Cockermouth (with lots of very good coffee shops and a beautiful bookshop!), there’s lots of different options. I If you’re wanting more beach options, Allonby is a great shout, and you can do some of the coastal path from there as well.

In the afternoon, don’t forget to pick up your pottery that you painted, and then why not head for a swim in the pool!

If you’re wanting to eat on site in the evening, I’d really recommend the pizza van! But, if you’re wanting something a little bit special, head for some incredible tapas at The Bank in Silloth! Make sure to book, as it’s only small and fills up quickly!

Final thoughts on Solway Holiday Park

I love coming to Solway Holiday Park – and already have plans to head back again later in the year!

It’s incredibly friendly here, and you’re made to feel really welcome. This was our first time visiting with a dog, and he was made to feel so welcome as well! It’s just a really relaxed environment here.
