How to Beat the Post Holiday Blues and Reset Your Routine

You spend so much time looking forward to your next holiday, have the best time away, and then it’s straight back You spend so much time looking forward to your next holiday, have the best time away, and then suddenly… you’re home again. Real life returns with full force, the suitcase sits half-open on the bedroom floor, and that gentle holiday glow starts slipping away.

The post-holiday blues is a real thing, and trying to find your rhythm again can feel surprisingly difficult. As someone who’s travelling and exploring regularly, often switching between early trains, new cities, and long travel days, I’ve finally started to find a routine that helps me reset. It’s all about easing yourself back in, not snapping straight back to normal.

Here are my top tips for relaxing, recharging, and easing back into daily life after a trip.

Create the perfect sleep environment with Simba

One of the biggest shocks to the system when you return from a trip is sleep. Different beds, unpredictable temperatures, early flights, long travel days… no wonder your body feels a bit out of sorts when you get back.

Lately, I’ve been focusing on making my home environment feel as cosy and restful as possible and genuinely, it’s helped ease me back in so much quicker. I’ve been using the Simba Hybrid Duvet in 10.5 tog, and it feels like slipping into hotel-bed levels of comfort, but without the checkout time.

A few things I’ve loved about it:

  • Temperature regulating, which is ideal when your body clock is still trying to figure out what day it is.
  • Light, breathable and cloud-soft, so you don’t wake up overheating or kicking the covers off at 3am.
  • Hypoallergenic materials, which feel fresh and clean after being on the road.

After a week of different hotel beds, climbing into something that feels familiar, comfy, and luxurious has made such a difference. I’ve been pairing it with a slow bedtime ritual too: fresh pyjamas, dim lights, a warm cup of tea and a few pages of a book. It’s been the perfect “welcome home” routine.

Starting with good sleep makes everything else feel easier and it’s honestly helped me settle back into everyday life much faster.

Have a to-do list to come back to (and keep it small)

Nothing kills the holiday glow quite like returning to chaos. Instead of landing in overwhelm, leave yourself a simple “landing list” before you go.

Think small and realistic:

  • Unpack just the essentials
  • Do one load of washing
  • A 10-minute inbox skim
  • Restock the fridge with easy meals
  • Reset your bedside table

It gives you gentle guidance without pressure. I also recommend leaving yourself a work version of this, to make it a little bit easier to get back into the office once you’re back.

Prioritise rest before productivity

Your mind might be ready to dive back into reality, but your body might not be. So give yourself permission to go slow and gently ease yourself back into reality. Some ways I like to do this include;

  • Have a gentle morning the day after you get home or if possible a whole day once you get back
  • Take a nap if you need one…travel tired is real
  • Plan a “nothing evening”

You don’t have to earn your rest just because you’ve been away.

Plan something small to look forward to

Post-holiday blues often hit because you go from excitement to nothing. You don’t need another big trip, but instead a spark of joy.

So plan yourself a little microadventure, and here are some ideas for you;

  • A midweek coffee date
  • A visit to a local bookshop
  • A night in with your favourite film
  • A weekend hike

Joy doesn’t only happen on holiday, it can happen in your everyday life too.

Try a “soft launch” back into work

Instead of diving straight in, ease yourself back.

You could:

  • Start with light tasks or admin
  • Block off your first hour for organisation
  • Don’t schedule meetings on your first day
  • Do a 15-minute inbox reset
  • Prioritise, don’t panic

A slower start makes everything feel more manageable.

It’s normal to feel sad that your trip is over, but coming home has its own kind of comfort. Whether it’s making your morning coffee, enjoying the view from your window, or having cuddles with your pets!
