We’re officially in the summer holidays, whether you have kids or not, which means it’s the perfect time to be going on microadventures. Whether you’re looking for ways to spend your annual leave at home, maximising your time adventuring out of work time, or making the most of your weekend, this is the absolute perfect time to start having more everyday adventures.
I truly love August – and not just because it’s my birthday – but even as an adult it feels like it truly is the summer holidays. You’re ready to squeeze as much fun out of the month as possible, saying yes to spontaneous plans and spending as much time outside as possible.
So if you’re ready to have a month filled with adventures, this list is just for you!
Grab your pals and have a picnic one weekend
One of my favourite things about summer is having more opportunities to have as many meals sat outside as possible. Having a picnic is one of the most summer-coded things you can plan, so grab your friends and/or family, pack some of your favourite foods (or head to M&S for a picky tea banquet), and just have a fun afternoon at a pretty picnic spot.
Make sure to leave no trace wherever you go – take your rubbish home with you, and whilst the weather is hot and dry, don’t light any fires as there is currently a very high wildfire risk here in the UK
Go to an outdoor cinema
The coolest thing about outdoor cinemas is they always seem to be in unique places – from castles to lakesides – and it means you don’t really mind if it’s a film you’ve seen before, the new and fun setting creates a whole new experience.
Have a beach or lake day
The ultimate summer day out has to be either a day at the beach or a day by the lake. Whether you read your book on the beach, take a paddle board or canoe out or go for a dip, there’s something very nostalgic and fun about a day by the water.
Take a trip to a festival or village show
It’s officially festival season, so whether you’ve already got your tickets for some of the big music festivals, or you’re staying more local there’s something for everyone. One of my favourite things to look out for are food festivals because I love getting to try new foods, and find local produce. If you’re going away, make sure to keep an eye out for any local cultural festivals, where you can really get to know a place better.
A festival I make sure to go to every year is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – I go at least once during the month and I just love getting to see different live comedy shows and it’s always a lot of fun.
Watch the sunset
You can never go wrong with watching the sunset, and I’ve loved the late evening walks I’ve been going on with the dog where we’ve got to experience the whole of golden hour, and watch the sky dance in different hues of orange.
You could drive to a sunset spot, take a hike or watch from your window if you’re blessed with a good view!
Head to your local lido
This is an everyday adventure I’ve only recently started doing, and honestly it’s made me feel like I’m on holiday every time I go. See where your nearest outdoor swimming pool is, and book a session there this month. Bonus points for if it’s a sunny blue sky day – I promise you it will feel like you’re on holiday!
